How to properly pronounce things from an East African Debater who knows Arabic

ilexchao:

reverseracism:

Iraq: e-rak (sounds like rock)

Al-Qaida: al-kaidah (not kayduh)

Iran: e-rahn (not ran, ah sound)

Eritrea: eh rhi tree uh

Sudan: su dahn (ah type sound)

Niger: Knee zher (its French, rhymes with Pierre)

Mauritania: ma u rhi tah nee ah (i’ve had people call it margarita before)

Djibouti: don’t pronounce the d

Sudan: don’t call it “the Sudan” pleaseee

Mujahdeen: moo jah hid dean

Pakistan: pah-key stahn

Afghanistan: ahhf gahn ee stahn

Can someone please explain “Quatar?”

Like “Cutter” but with more of a K sound at the front

For people who are interested in pronouncing/hearing things as they sound in their native languages, or in educating others about pronunciation, there is a website called Forvo which is a database of sound clips of native speakers pronouncing words. (As of this writing the website claims 2,579,183 word pronunciations from 318 languages.)

I’m not huge on always insisting people pronounce things the “right” way (some people genuinely have speech or cognitive processes that prevent them from it, or from doing it reasonably easily) BUT it’s great to know the “right” way for those of us who can make the effort, especially because a lot of people unapologetically pronounce things wrong just to belittle them or to distance themself from the issue like it’s not even on their radar of “important things”—ESPECIALLY white U.S. American English speakers talking about issues or names outside of the anglosphere…If you’re someone who does this even just for humor or any other reason, when you ACTUALLY CAN pronounce the word/name, please stop. You’re willfully disrespecting people and you look like an ass.

Also, on my part, huge thank you to OP for sounding these out. I was pronouncing one of these very jumbled/syllables out of order and didn’t even realize…I can get some things very backwards :S
